Scrappy Trip Around the World

This quilt uses left over 2-1/2" wide strips or Jelly Rolls. It resembles the layout called Many Trips Around the World but in a scrappy way.

Finished Size 70" x 94"
Block Size: 12" finished
Number of Blocks: 35
Setting: 5 x 7

Fabric Requirements
  • 105 assorted Jelly Roll strips (2.5" x WOF)
  • 1 yd fabric for first border and binding
    • Cut 8 strips @ 1.5" x WOF for Border 1. Sew the strips together into one long strip.
    • Cut 9 strips @ 2.5" x WOF for binding.

Cutting The Strips
For each strip, fold in half, wrong sides together as it comes in the package. Make the following cuts:
  • Cut off the selvage
  • Cut a 16" segment for the blocks
  • Cut a 4.5" segment for the second border.

For each strip, this will yield 2 @ 2.5" x 16" and 2 @ 2.5" x 4.5"

You will need a total of 210 @ 2.5" x 16" for the blocks and 152 @ 2.5" x 4.5" for the second border.

Piecing
Choose 6 @ 2.5" x 16" at random and stitch them together in a strip set as shown.

Fabrics need not be in any particular order. However, if you want the diagonal in each block to really stand out, put the darkest fabric at the bottom of the strip set.

Press the seams to one side, alternating the pressing direction.

Sub cut the strip set into 6 @ 2.5" x 12.5". columns.
