⛰️📏 Delectable Mountains Free Quilt Pattern | Layer Cake Quilt Design | AccuQuilt or Rotary Cutting

The perfect quilt project to use your Layer Cake squares. I made this quilt from 10" squares I cut myself. This quilt finishes about 60" x 81" but watch the video to see how easy it is to make the size you want!
Delectable Mountains Scrappy Quilt
To make 2 blocks you need 2 @ 10” squares, 1 light and 1 dark. From these squares you will make 2 blocks that are mirror images of each other. One is called the Right Peak and the other is called the Left Peak.

Right Peak      Left Peak

The Right and Left Peaks can be sewn together or mixed up for a scrappy design.

Fabric Requirements:

  • Light Fabric - 36 @ 10” squares
  • Dark Fabric – 36 @ 10” squares
  • Binding – 5/8 yd. Cut 8 strips @ 2-1/2” x WOF

Cutting 10" Squares

Rotary Cutting - I recommend the Perfect 10 Ruler from Creative Grids. This ruler can also be used to trim the blocks in Step 3 below.
AccuQuilt - If you have the AccuQuilt GO! Big Electric machine, use die # 55451 to cut the 10" squares.

Follow steps 1 thru 7 below to make 36 Right Peaks and 36 Left Peaks. Using the layout of your choice, make 8 rows of 9 blocks.

Cutting and Piecing The Delectable Mountain Quilt Block

1.  On the wrong side of the light fabric, mark a diagonal line. Stitch a scant 1/4” away from each side of the marked line.

2.  Cut along the diagonal line to make 2 HST units.

For marking and cutting the diagonal in steps 1 and 2 above, I use the Creative Grids 2.5" x 18.5" Ruler.

3.  Press seams open. Trim each HST to 9-1/2”.

4.  Position one HST as shown below and cut into 4 equal sections. Each section will be approx. 2-3/8”.

5. Reverse the order of the strips as shown. Sew the strips together. Press toward section 1. This is the Right Peak.

6.  Position the second HST as shown below and cut into 4 equal sections. Each section will be approx. 2-3/8”.

7.  Reverse the order of the strips as shown. Sew the strips together. Press toward section 4. This will be the Left Peak.

Layout The Delectable Mountains Quilt Top

In the layout shown, each row alternates Right Peak – Left  Peak – Right Peak, etc. starting with Right Peak.
Odd Number Rows

For the even number rows, each block is rotated 180 degrees.
