Color Block Quilt

The Color Block Quilt is pieced using strips of fabric. Choose 13 coordinating or contrasting fabrics. Cut each fabric into strips then piece the strips together into rows. Fabric from one row flows into the next. You’ll be amazed how fast this top goes together. The Color Block quilt finishes about 60″ x 72″.

Fabric and Cutting

3/4 yard each of 13 fabrics, Cut into 6 strips @ 2-1/2″ x WOF.

3/4 yard fabric for binding. Cut into 7 strips @ 2-1/2″ WOF

Arrange your fabric strips into the color order you like. Number the fabrics from 1 to 13. Fabric 1 and fabric 13 will only use 3 strips. Make a swatch chart or take a picture to remind you later.

Piecing Row 1

The top is pieced into 12 rows or blocks of color. Each block has 2 colors. For information on strip piecing see Strip Piecing Video Tutorial.

Step 1 – Using fabrics 1 and 2, piece two strip sets.

Step 2 – Sub-cut each strip set into 2-1/2″ segments. You will need 15 from each set.

Step 3 – Take one segment from each strip set and piece the unit shown.

Step 4 Sew the units together into a row.

Press seams toward the left.

Piecing the Remaining Rows

Using the 3 remaining strips of Fabric 2 and three of the Fabric 3 strips, piece the strip sets.

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 to complete Rows 2 through 12. For the pressing direction, press the seams in the odd numbered rows to the left. Press seams in the even numbered rows to the right. Sew the rows together as you go to complete the quilt top.

This quilt looks great with an allover design for the quilting.

Happy quilting!
