Burgoyne Surrounded Sew Along | Free Quilting Pattern

This pattern uses 13 fat quarters for the block accent fabrics and a single fabric for the background. You might find it easier to organize things if you use 7 one-gallon size plastic zipper bags or small containers.

Fabric

  • 13 Fat quarters
  • 5-1/4 yards background
  • 3/4 yds binding

The Units



Light 3-Patch Unit

All the Light 3-Patch units are made from the same fabric. This unit is found on all sides of the block and in each of the Center 9-Patch Units.

  1. Choose 1 fat quarter for the accent fabric. From this fat quarter cut 5 @ 1-1/2” x 21”.
  2. From the background fabric, cut 5 @ 3-1/2” x WOF.
    • Cut each strip in half to make 10 @ 3-1/2” x 21”.
  3. Using the 10 @ 3-1/2” x 21” background pieces, make 5 strip sets as shown below. Sub cut to 60 segments.

Make 60. Put 12 pieces in the Center 9-Patch bag and 48 pieces in the Light 3-Patch bag.
 

Cut Remaining Fat Quarters

From each of the remaining fat quarters, cut the following:

Cut Background Fabric

Sub cut 12 @ 1-1/2” x 7” (C).

Dark 3-Patch Bag

1 @ 3-1/2” x WOF.

Sub cut to 24 @ 1-1/2” x 3-1/2” (F).

Center 9-Patch Bag

12 @ 1-1/2” x WOF.

For each strip, sub cut to:

·        1 @ 13” (J)  and 2 @ 7” (I)

·        1 @ 13” (K)

 

 

9-Patch Bag

4 @ 7-1/2” x WOF.

Sub cut to 48 @ 3-1/2” segments. (M)

Dark 3-Patch Bag

6 @ 3-1/2” x WOF.

Sub cut to 96 @ 2-1/2” segments. (N)

Put 48 pieces in 9-Patch Bag

Put 48 in 4-Patch Bag

3 @ 17-1/2” x WOF. Sub cut to 31 @ 3-1/2” segments.

Sash / Cornerstones

2 @ 1-1/2” x WOF. Sub cut to 10 @ 7” segments (O)

Sash / Cornerstones

2 @ 1-1/2” x WOF. Sub cut to 20 @ 4” segments (P)

Binding = Cut 8 @ 2-1/2" x WOF

Center 9-Patch Unit

Using the Light 3-Patch Unit, 4 @ 3-1/2” accent squares (E) from the same fabric and 2 @ 1-1/2” x 3-1/2” background pieces (F), sew the center 9-patch unit as shown. Make 12.

Dark 3-Patch Unit

1.     Using the 2 @ 3-1/2” x 7”  (D) accent pieces from the same fabric and one 3-1/2” x 7” (C) background piece, make the strip set shown below. Sub cut to 4 @ 1-1/2” segments.


2.     Make 4 from each accent fabric for a total of 48 units.

3.     Sew one 3-1/2” x 7-1/2” background piece (M) to each Dark 3-Patch unit.

4.     Remove all the Light 3-Patch units and sew one to each of the units made in step 3 above.

5.     Place all pieces back in the Dark 3-Patch bag.

9-Patch Unit

1.     Using the:

·        2 @ 1-1/2” x 13” accent pieces (G),

·        the matching 1-1/2” x 7” accent piece (H)

·        1 @ 1-1/2” x 13” background piece (J), and

·        the 2 @ 1-1/2” x 7” background pieces (I),

make the strip sets shown below.

2.     Sub cut the 13” strip set into 8 @ 1-1/2” segments.

3.     Sub cut the 7” strip set into 4 @ 1-1/2” segments.

4.     Sew the segments together as shown.

5.     Sew one 2-1/2” x 3-1/2” background piece (N) to one side of each 9-Patch.

4-Patch Unit

1.     Using the 1-1/2” x 13” accent fabric (L) and the 1-1/2” x 13” background fabric (K), stitch the strip set shown.

2.     Sub cut the strip into 8 @ 1-1/2” segments. Sew the segments together as shown.

3.     Sew one 2-1/2” x 3-1/2” background piece (N) to one side of the 4-Patch.


Assemble the Blocks

Using all the units and background pieces in each bag, assemble the blocks. Use the diagram for placement of the pieces.

Cornerstone Unit

Using

·        two 7” accent fabric strips (Q),

·        matching 4” strip (R),

·        one 7” background strip (O), and

·        two 4” background strips (P),

make the strip sets shown. For the accent fabrics you can mix them up or use the same fabric for all 3 accent pieces.

1.     Sub cut the 7” strip set into 4 @ 1-1/2” segments.

2.     Sub cut the 4” strip set into 2 @ 1-1/2” segments.

3.     Sew the segments together as shown to make 2 Cornerstone Units.

        
       You will need a total of 20 Cornerstones. You will have a few extra pieces left over.

Assemble the Top

Lay the blocks out in 4 rows of 3. Use the diagram on page 1 for placement of cornerstones and sashes.
