The Hosanna Block is also known as the Palm block.
Finished size approx. 64" x 82"
The Hosanna block is also known as the Palm block. Traditionally this block was made with 4 palms oriented as shown below. The block is 12" finished so each palm is 6" finished.
Traditional Hosanna Block
This version is paper pieced and the single palm also finishes at 6". Additionally, this version changes the orientation of the palms, adds a small sash between the palms and sets the entire block on point.
Revised Hosanna Block
One palm block consists of a left side and a right side.

Fabrics
The fabrics used for the blocks in the sample quilt were all scraps. For the accent fabrics, use medium to dark fabrics. For the background fabric use low volume prints, white, and/or white tone-on-tone. For the setting triangles and sashing, a single white tone-on-tone fabric was used.
Accent Fabric
The accent fabric is placed in sections 2, 4 and 6 on both sides of the block. For 2 blocks (2 left sides and 2 right sides) cut the following:
For Section 2:
Cut 1 square @ 8" and sub cut into 2 @ 8" x 4" rectangles. Stack the rectangles wrong sides together. Cut the stack in half diagonally to yield 4 long triangles. Two triangles for the left half and two for the right.
Cut 2 squares @ 7". Stack the squares with wrong sides together. Sub cut the stack into 4 @ 7" x 3-1/2" rectangles. Cut each stack in half diagonally to yield 8 long triangles. Four triangles for the left half and four for the right.
Background Fabric
The background fabric is placed in sections 1, 3, 5 and 7.For Section 1:
Repeat the cutting for Accent Fabric Section 2.
For Sections 3 and 5:
Repeat the cutting for Accent Fabric Sections 4 and 6.
For Section 7:
Cut 2 @ 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares. Cut each square in half diagonally to yield 4 triangles. Two are for the left side and two for the right.
Fabric for Setting Triangles and Sashings -- 2-1/4 yds
Setting Triangles
Setting triangles are used along the edge of the quilt and are shown in grey in the unit diagrams below.
- Cut 2 strips @ 9-3/4" x WOF.
- Sub cut into 8 @ 9-3/4" squares.
- Cut each square in half diagonally twice to yield 32 setting triangles.
Sashings
Block sashings go between blocks when assembling the units in the next section. They are shown in grey in the units below.
- Cut 2 strips @ 6-1/2" x WOF
- Sub cut to 78 @ 1" x 6-1/2". Used in all units.
Unit sashings are used to complete the units and are also shown in grey in the units below.
- Cut 1 strip @ 15" x WOF.
- Sub cut to 32 @ 1" x 15". These strips are cut a little longer then trimmed after assembling the unit.
- Cut 1 strip @ 13" x WOF.
- Sub cut to 24 @ 1" x 13".
Final sashings are used to sew the rows together and are shown in red in Final Assembly below. These are cut longer than needed and trimmed when the rows are sewon together.
- Cut 10 strips @ 1" x WOF.
- Use diagonal seams to sew all the strips together end-to-end to make one long strip. Press the seams. Later, during final assembly, you will measure and cut the length you need.

Assemble The Rows
Use the diagram below to piece rows 1 thru 8. A 1" x 13" row sashing, shown in blue, is sewn between the units where needed.
Final Assembly
Finally, you will sew the 8 rows together. Here are the steps for each row starting with Row 1 and Row 2.
- Measure the top of Row 2 and add about 2".
- Cut a piece of the Final sashing to that size.
- Fold the sashing piece in half to find the center and put a pin there.
- Find the center of the top of Row 2 and put a pin there.
- With the sashing on top, match the centers and pin the sashing to Row 2.
- Sew the sashing to Row 2. Press towards the sashing.
- Sew Row 1 to the Row 2 sashing, matching the centers. Press towards the sashing.
- Using the edge of the quilt as a guide, trim the sashing.
