1204 Square Dance Quilt Block Tutorial | Block of the Day 2023

This block consists of half square triangles, small and large squares and flying geese units. Included is a tutorial on how to make Flying Geese 4 at a Time.

Fabric and Cutting the Square Dance Quilt Block

Cutting diagrams for patches are shown. The equivalent AccuQuilt dies for each patch are listed below the diagram.

55063, 55712 or 8” Qube Shape 5


55059, 55709 or 55018 or 8” Qube Shape 2


55047, 55711, 55316 or 8" Qube Shape 4


55060, 55708, 55018 or 8” Qube Shape 1



A – Corners - 2 @ 2-7/8” (3” to trim) squares for HST 2 At A

Time OR cut each in half once diagonally for 4 patches.

A – Flying Geese – 8 @ 2-7/8” (3” to trim) squares for FG 4 At

A Time.

B – 8 @ 2-1/2” squares.


A – Corners - 2 @ 2-7/8” (3” to trim) squares for HST 2 At A

Time OR cut each in half once diagonally for 4 patches.

B – 4 @ 2-1/2” squares.

C – 1 @ 5-1/4” square for FG 4 At A Time.

D – 1 @ 4-1/2” square.


C – 1 @ 5-1/4” square for FG 4 At A Time.

Piecing the Square Dance Quilt Block

1. Using the corner A patches, make 4 HST units. Each HST should measure 2-1/2”.



2. Using the HST units from step 1 and B units, make 4 corner units. Each unit should measure 4-1/2”.

3. Using your preferred method, make 4 each of the FG units shown. Each unit should measure 4-1/2” x 2-1/2”.



4. Sew the FG units from step 3 together as shown to make the side units. Each unit should measure 4-1/2”.


5. Refer to diagram to assemble block.
