Revised February 17, 2021
Changed number of units needed to complete quilt.
Last weekend I cut the fabrics for this quilt block. This is the sample I made before cutting all the fabric pieces with my AccuQuilt.
I started with the half square triangles. I stitched all 124 HSTs. Then pressed them all to the dark fabric.
Next I pieced 31 of the Shoo Fly blocks. This block is in the center of the Scrap Garden block.
After making a few samples, next I started with the TriRec units.
I pressed all these to the light fabrics. Now I'm working on the 4-patch units.
I piece 2 strips together then cut 2" segments. Then I mix up everything for more variety.
As of this morning, I'm about half way through the 128 4-patch units. I will finish those this afternoon.
When I make a quilt I like to make sample units and blocks before cutting all the fabric. This way, if I don't like how the finished block looks or I get frustrated with the piecing, I can forget about this project and move on to the next. I haven't cut up all the fabric yet so I don't have an unfinished project taking up space. I do have a lot of orphan blocks and units though!
For the first part of this project see Monday, February 8, 2021 post --> This Week At Five Oaks.
Happy quilting!
